Year 5 - Planning for Conflict & Preparing for our 'Spy' Project

1. Please complete the five handplans for each of the different types of conflict.

Due: Thursday.

2. Next week we are going to be looking at spy novels, because this is a brilliant way to learn about using suspense and action.

Novelists often use models to help them 'picture' a location in their imagination (a bit like playing in a doll house!); I would like you to design and build a secret hq for a bad guy.

Build a model of a secret hq. Here are some of the things you could include:

* Banks of computer screens
* A giant map of the world
* Secret doors or compartments
* Torture chamber (yuck!)
* Sharks!
* Henchmen/goons
* Evil pets
* Rockets
* Dwarf servant
* Desk
* Armchair with buttons

How you build the model is up to you! Here are some of the materials you might choose to use:
* Cardboard boxes painted over
* Sticky-back plastic
* Wood
* Paper mashed and glued
* Washing up bottles
* Model Paint

This video will give you some ideas (don't make Tracy Island, though! Just use the same techniques!)

Hint: Design the hq on paper before you start to construct it!

Be as imaginative as you can! Bring your model into class next Thursday! We are going to base a series of stories in this location, so do a great job! There will be a small prize for the best model!

We'll photograph the models and stick them on the pupil wiki for the world to enjoy, and then write scenes and stories set in this location!

L.O. To revise the goal-impediment-solution method & To revise the importance of conflict in a short story.

Homework:
Brainstorm and plan a goal-impediment-solution plan for the title, ‘Hunted’. Write the first 15 lines of this story, beginning with an exciting opening line, and setting the scene using our descriptive techniques.

Feeling clever?
Include personification & the bracketing comma. Annotate your ‘finished’ 15 lines to show me where you’ve included the bracketing comma.

Year 5 Fiction - Planning for Conflict

L.O. To understand the different forms of conflict.

We've been studying the 'fab four golden rules of conflict. Click here to revise the fab four.

Today we focussed on planning stories with conflict.Click here to revise conflict.

Homework: The weekend homework comes in two parts:

1. Using the picture prompt, write five different plans - one for each of the five forms of conflict we studied in class. Remember to revisit baldworm.co.uk if you're not sure about any of the five forms of conflict!

You may plan in your preferred format, but make sure your writing is legible!

Visit the 'Planning a Short Story under Examination Conditions' area on the pupil wiki to download another copy of the worksheet.

Feeling clever? Make sure your stories build to a climax!

2. Next week we are going to begin our preparation for Assessment Week by revising Descriptive Skills. Start your revision by clicking here. On Monday I'm going to give you a little test: I'm simply going to ask you to list as many descriptive techniques as you can remember, e.g. Similes, Light, Movement, Smell, etc.

Due: Monday.

Year 4 - Story with a Dilemma

L.O. To understand the meaning of the term 'dilemma'

In class we read the first part of the story 'A Bad Thing to Do', and improvised some possible endings to the story.

Homework: Write your own conclusion to the story. Remember to write in the first person. Think about:

What happened when 'you' did the bad thing?
How did you feel when you were doing it?
How did you feel after you had done it?
Did anything happen then to make you feel even worse about what you had done?

Don't forget to include indented direct speech in your story.

Feeling clever? We'll be focussing on including characterisation in our writing this term. Click here and here to learn more about characterisation, and include some shown feelings. Extra credit to the girls who then annotate the shown feelings using a gel pen!
