Year Five Fiction: Writing a Comic Story Based on a Journal Idea

Writers gather ideas in a journal. Year Five have been keeping journals of comic ideas.

Homework: Please write a humorous story based on one of the story plans you came up with in class when you were working with Mrs Mannan. Write one-and-a-half side of A4.

Don't forget to use a full range of descriptive techniques and plenty of thoughts and feelings.

Feeling clever? Include the joining and listing commas, and then annotate your 'finished' work to show me where you've used them!

Year Five Planning: Planning for Conflict

This is a 'prezi' - a new kind of PowerPoint. Click the 'play' button to navigate around my 'Planning a Short Story' prezi:


Task: Create a neat - very neat! - hand plan from one of the hand plans you've created in class. Colour the palm in using pencil crayons - use 'flesh tones'. Write in blue ink cartridge pen. Don't forget to include the brainstorm. We'll be photographing this work for display on the pupil wiki, so make sure it really is super neat!

Year Six Fiction: Escalating Tension

Task: Please write 'escalating tension' plans based on the titles 'The Un-door' & 'Winter Pruning'

Hint: An un-door might be something that looks like a door, or is pretending to be a door...but isn't!

'Pruning' is when you cut off, or cut back, part of a flower, like this:



...but the character in your story doesn't have to be pruning flowers, does she...

Year 5 Fiction: Visual Planning

We don't always need to plan by writing. Visual learners may benefit from planning by drawing a story map or a sketch.


Task: Please complete your Heath Robinson sketch and write a six-eight line description of the machine, using all of Bald Worm's descriptive techniques:

Write a story beginning with the line, 'I had never seen anything like it.'

Year 6 - Stories based on a Sentence

Write a second draft of your timed writing story (Write a story that includes the sentence: "Why are you arresting me?" she screamed. "I - I've done nothing wrong!"), focussing on making improvements.
